GARCIA FAURA takes part in the rehabilitation of the historical building of the Barcelona Metalurgical Mutual

GARCIA FAURA is involved in the integral remodelling of the MC Mutual building, located on Diagonal avenue in Barcelona, in the Eixample district. It is a jewel of the Catalan post-rationalism protected by the Barcelona City Council.

The building was designed in the late 1950s by the founders of Catalan post-rationalism, Oriol Bohigas, Josep Maria Martorell and Damià Ribas, to house the headquarters and hospital of the Insurance Metalurgical Mutual, a pioneer in the care of metal workers.

It is a building with a triangular-shaped façade, curtain wall and details in pink granite and oxidised copper. It has a surface area of 6,657 square metres distributed over seven floors, and was in operation until the end of 2024. The current refurbishment will centralise MC Mutual’s activities.

The intervention will create healthy work spaces, with soundproofed offices and collaborative areas with advanced technology for face-to-face or telematic meetings, as well as a modern assembly hall that will respect the original architectural value.

Other emblematic elements will also be preserved, such as the spiral staircase, noble spaces, and the mural by the photographer Francesc Català Roca and the painting by Francesc Todó, both tributes to the metallurgical industry.

An efficient and sustainable building

The conservation of these heritage elements will condition a pioneering reform in energy efficiency and sustainable, as the installation of a photovoltaic roof on the seventh floor, installation that will generate renewable energy for the entire building.

The exterior enclosures and glazing will also be renovated with high-efficiency air-conditioning systems and LED lighting, which will not only reduce energy consumption but also improve thermal and acoustic insulation.

Measures for responsible water management will also be implemented, with water consumption limiters and recycling systems.

Under the premise of improving the energy efficiency of the building and preserving the architectural values, GARCIA FAURA will manufacture and install 180 façade enclosure modules, consisting of sets of steel windows and fixed enclosures. They are developed from steel profiles characterised by narrow frames, which are adapted to buildings such as this one, which have special requirements in terms of historic preservation.

The works are completed with the supply and installation of 1,300 square metres of high technical performance glazing.

The set of actions of GARCIA FAURA in this project are subjected to the protocols of internal quality control, so much in workshop as in installation, with the aim to guarantee the maximum satisfaction of the client and to continue turning into company of reference in the matter of quality and finished.
